Dollarlabs: Ultimate Discounts

Frequently Asked Questions

Setup & discount types

What types of discounts can I create?

Product, order and shipping discounts, bundles (including cart transform merge bundles), BOGO and Buy X Get Y, volume and quantity discounts, tiered cart value discounts, fixed amounts per currency, variant metafield pricing, and bulk unique codes. Checkout validation and payment method hiding are also built in. If your offer isn't listed here, contact us and we'll tell you whether it's possible.

How do I run "Buy 2 of X, get Y at 50% off"?

Define the qualifying items (X) and the discounted items (Y) in the rule builder. The example below walks through it step by step.

Can I apply the discount to the cheapest item in the cart? What about the most expensive?

Yes. For BOGO offers, discounting the cheapest qualifying item is the usual choice, since it protects your margin on the pricier item. You decide whether the cheapest or the most expensive items get discounted, using the sorting order in the line limit setting.

Can I price a variant from a metafield value instead of a fixed rule?

Yes. The Variant Metafield Price discount type reads the target price from a variant metafield. Useful for ERP driven or per SKU contract pricing, where maintaining individual rules doesn't scale.

My store sells in multiple currencies. Can I set "$10 off" in USD but "€8 off" in EUR instead of a converted amount?

Yes. The Fixed Amount Off Per Currency type lets you define the value per currency or market, so customers see clean amounts instead of converted ones like €9.13.

Can one discount code do different things for different products, say 20% off shirts but 10% off shoes with the same code?

Yes. A single code can carry different discount amounts per category, or trigger multiple offers at once.

I need to generate bulk unique discount codes for a campaign. How many can the app handle, and how do I get them out?

Up to 20 million codes, generated in one batch and exported instantly. Works for email campaigns, influencer promos, print inserts, and similar. For anything public facing, unique codes per recipient are safer than one shared code, since shared codes end up on coupon sites quickly.

Can I block checkout entirely if the cart doesn't meet certain conditions?

Yes. Checkout Validation can block cart or checkout completion based on your rules, for example quantity limits or restricted product combinations.

Can I hide or reorder payment methods conditionally, like hiding Cash on Delivery for discounted orders?

Yes. Payment customization lets you sort and hide payment methods based on conditions.

How do I create a discount?

Create and save the discount in Ultimate Discounts, then define its cart groups, rules, targets, discount type, allocation strategy and usage limits. For reliable targeting, use a specifically defined cart group rather than the default “All” group.

How should cart groups, rules and targets fit together?

Cart groups hold the products or lines being evaluated. Use the relevant group in both the discount's rules and its target, so the discount is triggered by, and applied to, the items you intend.

Can I test a discount before launching it?

Yes. Restrict a temporary discount to a specific customer ID or tag, or create it as a discount code, so only you can trigger it. Testing on a duplicated theme or a development store also keeps changes away from live customers.

Can I copy discounts or codes between stores?

Most configuration data transfers, but products, variants and collections have to be re-selected because their IDs differ between stores.

Can one code do tiered or “Buy More, Save More” pricing?

Yes. Set up multiple subtotal, quantity or collection-based tiers under a single discount, for example bigger discounts as customers spend more. Keep the lower and upper bounds from overlapping when you only want one tier to apply at a time.

How do I remove a discount?

Disable it in Ultimate Discounts or from Shopify's Discounts screen, depending on how it was created. Uninstalling the app cancels the app setup, but any theme changes you added separately may still need to be removed.

Combining, stacking & limits

Can customers combine my discount with other discounts or codes?

Only if both discounts allow it. Combinations follow Shopify's class system (product, order, shipping), and this behavior is the same for every discount app. Set your combination options deliberately before a big sale rather than discovering conflicts during one.

Two of my product discounts both match the same item. Which one applies?

By default, Shopify applies just one product discount per line item, whichever gives the customer the bigger saving. On Shopify Plus, we recently added support for stacking multiple product discounts on the same line, so you can have more than one apply where you want.

Can I make my volume discount combine with a welcome code, but NOT with my VIP discount?

Yes, as long as the VIP discount is a discount code. On the volume discount, add a rejection rule that blocks the VIP code but still allows the welcome code. This only works if the discounts are already set to combine with each other in Shopify.

Can I set discount priority, or base a discount on the subtotal after another discount?

No. Shopify calculates all discounts at the same time, so there is no ordering and no post discount subtotal available. No app can do this today.

Customers are entering a code on top of my automatic offer and double dipping. How do I stop it?

Use the "Reject discount codes" limit. Worth enabling on any generous automatic offer.

Can I cap a discount at a maximum dollar amount, like "20% off, up to $50"?

Yes, with the Max Amount limit. Max Quantity and Line Limit are available too. We recommend a cap on any percentage offer, since one high value cart on an uncapped code can cost more than the rest of the campaign combined.

What's the difference between "Line Limit" and "Global Line Limit" strategies?

Both do the same job. The difference is scope. A line limit set in a discount's config applies only to that config, while the global line limit is set at the function level instead, so it covers the whole function.

How do I limit a discount to one use per customer, or a fixed number of uses?

Turn on the one-use-per-customer setting to cap each customer at a single redemption. A separate total-usage limit controls how many times the discount can be used overall.

Can one customer use different codes on separate orders?

With one-use-per-customer enabled, the limit applies to the customer rather than to each individual code. Note that different email addresses can be treated as different customers.

Targeting & eligibility

Can I give wholesale pricing to B2B tagged customers automatically, invisible to normal shoppers?

Yes. Automatic discounts scoped to B2B customers by tag are a documented recipe. For full wholesale workflows with price lists and case quantities, the dedicated B2B Custom Pricing app is the better fit than discount rules.

Can I vary the discount by the customer's country or Shopify Market?

Yes. Market and region conditions are supported, and can be combined with per currency fixed amounts for fully market specific offers.

I sell with Downpay (partial payments). Can I discount only the items that are paid in full?

Yes. There's a dedicated recipe for this, so deposit and partial payment items stay undiscounted.

Can I give a free product plus a one time discount when someone starts a subscription?

Yes. The recipe combines a free gift with a first order subscription discount.

What can a discount be targeted by (tags, collections, variants, metafields)?

Depending on the configuration, you can use customer tags, product tags, collections, variants and selected metafield values. Variant metafields can also supply a fixed price, typically as a JSON value such as {"key":"29.99"}; they can't currently be used for every kind of condition.

Can I target POS locations, or specific markets and currencies?

Yes. Add retail-location conditions for POS-specific offers, and configure discounts by market or currency where supported.

Can an order discount apply to only some products?

Not reliably at the individual-line level. When only selected items should be reduced, use a product discount targeting the relevant collection or cart group instead of an order discount.

POS, storefront & display

Does the app work with Shopify POS?

Yes, including POS only bundles. Cashiers scan the individual products, and the app detects the complete set and applies the fixed bundle price, for example A plus B plus C for $30 regardless of individual prices. No extra POS extensions are needed.

My automatic discount works online but not at the register. Why?

As long as no custom discount has been applied to the line item, an automatic discount should apply to it in Shopify POS too. If it doesn't, it's usually a configuration issue, or the discount hasn't been published to the POS sales channel.

Can shoppers see the discounted price on the product page before adding to cart?

Yes, through the Offer Engine, on product and collection pages, with volume break tables for quantity offers. We recommend setting this up for any storefront offer. A discount that's only visible at checkout converts far less.

Can I run a discount that only exists on a specific landing page?

Yes. See the case study: a beauty brand protected over $50,000 in BFCM margin by scoping their discount to a landing page instead of running it storewide.

Can I auto add a free gift to the cart when conditions are met, and at checkout too?

Yes. Auto add to cart works through the Offer Engine on any plan. Auto adding a gift at checkout based on a discount code requires Shopify Plus, because it depends on checkout extensibility. That requirement comes from Shopify, not the app.

Why does my automatic discount's custom title show correctly at checkout, but discount codes just show the code itself?

This is Shopify's design. Custom titles apply to automatic discounts only. For codes, Shopify always displays the redeem code as the title on cart, checkout, orders and abandoned checkouts. If you want customers to see specific text, make the code itself that text, for example SUMMER20.

Why is the discount title different on draft orders?

Also Shopify behavior. For Functions discounts on draft orders, Shopify uses the backend discount title rather than the title computed by the Function. Name backend titles as if customers will see them.

My checkout keeps showing a "prices have changed" popup when a discount applies. What's going on?

This affects stores using dynamic tax inclusive pricing when the buyer is in a region that doesn't expect tax inclusive prices. Functions that adjust pricing run before the discount Function, which triggers the recalculation popup. It's Shopify's execution order, and no discount app can suppress it.

Do bundle discounts create `item_components` in my Liquid cart, like cart transform bundles do?

Depends on the bundle type. Cart transform merge bundles transform the cart lines and produce item_components. Discount based bundles apply as discounts and leave the lines untouched. If your theme code expects item_components, use the cart transform variant.

Plans & billing

What plans and trial does Ultimate Discounts offer?

The Pro plan covers the standard discount features. Checkout-extension features need the Advanced plan and Shopify Plus. Every plan comes with a seven-day free trial, and you can check current rates on the pricing page.

Does the app work on Shopify plans other than Plus?

Yes. Shopify Functions are supported on standard plans, including Grow. Shopify Plus is only required for checkout-extension features, such as certain automatic gift additions.

Troubleshooting & compatibility

Why is my discount applying to every item in the cart?

The target is most likely set to ALL. Change it to the cart group that contains the products which should actually receive the discount.

Why does a discount fail on large carts or big product selections?

Shopify Function complexity and input-size limits can stop very large configurations from running. Use collections or metafields instead of long product lists, reduce collection queries, split the setup across functions, or ask us for a custom optimized function.

The discount shows at checkout but not in my cart drawer. Why?

Shopify can calculate the discount correctly while the theme or a cart app fails to display it. Check your theme's cart drawer, AJAX navigation, any upsell apps, and the checkout-button implementation separately.

Why does a discount calculate unexpectedly when another discount is present?

Shopify's discount functions run in parallel and generally see the original line and cart values, not another discount's reduced price. Your combination and allocation settings decide which discounts ultimately apply.

Can a discount depend on the customer's chosen shipping method?

No. Discount functions run before delivery customizations, so they don't receive the selected shipping method.
